Safety Tip from Throttle - Emergency stop situation on a highway

Return to tip of the week

On a multi-lane highway, if cars abruptly stop ahead of you, seek shelter from someone behind you not stopping in time. Reduce your speed to almost a stop and:

  • move to the shoulder if you are in a lane next to the left or right shoulder

    OR

  • go between the vehicles in front of you

Continue to move forward so as not to put yourself at the rear most part of the backup. Do this until you see traffic behind you has stopped. This should prevent someone unable to stop from hitting you.
