How did you hear about the SCRC and when did you
join?
Met Ladygo at a Fairfax Hog meeting and she invited
me to attend a meeting. Found everyone to be
friendly, outgoing, and ready to ride… My kind of
people
How
long have you been riding?
Over 30
years
Have you ever taken a motorcycle safety course?
Can't say that I
have. You’ve seen me ride. Do I Need one? (Laughing)
(Maybe not Laughing)
What was your first bike?
1973 Honda CB350
How many bikes have you owned?
Seven
Why do you ride?
I started
riding out of necessity. Cheaper than a car. Then it
just stuck. Nothing like the freedom
Have you ridden with an organized group before?
Yes, a Honda
Club back in the 70's
What modifications have you done to your bike?
Screamin' Eagle
pipes and mapping (I think that’s what Tweaker said
it was. I said it was a 1st stage download. OOPS)
What accessories do you want to add to your bike?
Some extra
chrome, backrest/luggage rack, windshield
What is your dream bike?
Already
considering a HD Ultra Classic
What kind of riding do you like to do –
straight-aways or twisties?
It depends
on the day. Last couple of rides I have been able to
combine them. I would prefer rides that have a
little of both.
If you have a nickname, how did you get it? Tell
the truth!
I’ve been a
member for a month and am on my 4th one. I have
learned that nothing is safe or off limits when it
comes to nicknames. I prefer Murph as I have been
called that for as long as I remember. I think
Ricochet must get a cut from all the patches I may
end up ordering. (Also with a laugh) Not sure one
vest will handle them all…
What is your favorite riding route?
Any 6-8 hour
roundtrip will work. I do enjoy riding our HILLS to
the west around Luray and Front Royal. A good lunch
and company can make any route fun and enjoyable.
Do you ride your bike to work?
On
occasion, certainly not the norm (YET)
What is the fastest you’ve ridden?
How long is the
statute of limitations on self confessed traffic
violations? 140 on the Dulles Access Road on the
750. Nice road, long straight-aways, not much Police
presence. (Then not now) Bike got the wobbles as I
decelerated. Scared the s--- out of me. That was the
last time I tried any land speed records.
What is your favorite time of year to ride?
Will ride
anytime. Fall is my Favorite.
Have you ever been down? If so, how were you hurt
and what did you learn from the incident?
On 3 separate
occasions. In 1974 was hit by a car that totaled my
first 350. (Didn’t take much to total one of those).
In 1979 ran into the side of a car backing out of a
driveway on Rt 193 on a Honda 750. 1998 got cut off
on Rt 7 and laid my Vulcan down. Never been hurt
bad, not counting a bad case of road rash. Cage
drivers really don’t understand the capabilities or
limitations of Bikes
Have you ever done an “Iron Butt” ride?
Nope, Not yet.
If not, what is the furthest you’ve ridden?
Been to
Nags Head a couple of times. I’m ready to venture
further on my new bike.
What was the worst weather in which you’ve ridden?
Caught in the
snow on the 350. Rode from DC to Arlington with both
feet down like Fred Flintstone the whole way. Not
Fun at all.
Do you know how to work on your bike?
Bits and
pieces. I’m not afraid to turn a wrench. I would not
attempt internal engine work. Have done some of the
customizing on my new bike.
What is your favorite road song?
Danger Zone
(Kenny Loggins). Riding or Flying
What was your most adventurous ride?
I look at every ride as an adventure. Took off one
morning in ’73 to OC with 3$ in my pocket. Sounds
bad, remember gas was $.33 a gallon, and a Number 1
at Macs was $.79. I was rich. Back when dinosaurs
roamed…you will always see something new or meet
someone new, even on a route you’ve ridden many
times.
What rallies or events do you like to attend?
So far I’ve enjoyed every event I’ve been to.
Haven’t been to an official rally.
Is there someone who rides “two-up” with you?
My wife
rides occasionally. There needs to be a large carrot
at the middle or the end of the journey. She doesn’t
share my passion for flying or riding. She doesn’t
stand in the way either. That’s cool and it works
for us.
Off the cuff from ... Murph
"I have been fortunate to try many things
and get hooked on a few. Namely Flying, Riding, and
Diving. I think that you should challenge yourself
to always push the envelope, have an open mind, and
accept people for who they are. A simple smile or
wave while riding can brighten someone’s day,
including your own. Thanks for making me feel
welcome…"
